Data Set 4: Environmental Effects on Moth Population Growth Rates

چکیده

This is an example of an analysis with several possible explanatory variables, none of which is of any special interest a priori. The purpose of the study is to determine which of these variables seems most related to the response variable, and how, in order to suggest possible causal hypotheses as well as to allow prediction. The analysis therefore aims to develop a model which explains the data well — to select apparently important variables — rather than to make formal inferences. This model building will be done in two ways: using all the data (with internal validation), and splitting the data into “training” and “validation” sets. Given the small sample size the latter method really is not appropriate but is shown to illustrate how it would be done.

Comparison of delayed female mating on reproductive biology of codling moth and obliquebanded leafroller.

Delay of mating was examined as a possible mechanism for population decreases associated with mating disruption for codling moth, Cydia pomonella L., and obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). We examined the effect of delaying female mating 0, 2, 4, or 6 d while holding male age constant on life table parameters of both species. We found that inc...

Long-distance dispersal of the gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) facilitated its initial invasion of Wisconsin.

Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) spread is dominated by stratified dispersal, and, although spread rates are variable in space and time, the gypsy moth has invaded Wisconsin at a consistently higher rate than in other regions. Allee effects, which act on low-density populations ahead of the moving population that contribute to gypsy moth spread, have also been observed to be consistently weaker...

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL ECOLOGY Effects of Phenolic Glycosides and Protein on Gypsy Moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) and Forest Tent Caterpillar (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) Performance and Detoxication Activities

Levels of phenolic glycosides and protein inßuence the quality of aspen leaves to herbivorous insects, and vary in relation to genetic and environmental factors. This research was conducted to assess the independent and interactive effects of phenolic glycosides and protein on the performance and detoxication enzyme activities of gypsy moths, Lymantria dispar (L.), and forest tent caterpillars,...

Oak mast seeding as a direct cause of gypsy moth outbreaks?

In our paper (Liebhold et al. 2000) we reviewed the literature on the dynamics of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) populations in North America. This paper highlighted a previously developed hypothesis, namely that gypsy moth outbreaks are caused by decreased rates of predation by small mammal predators as a result of diminished predator populations following years of low mast production by...

The Effects of Democracy on Environment Quality Index in Selected OIC Countries

The relationship between democracy and environment has always been controversial. Some scientists found that democracy had a positive impact on reducing environmental disruption. Other scholars claimed that democracy tends to accelerate environmental degradation. Ther are many studies focusing on main determinants of environmental degradation. More recently, democracy is considered to be one of...
